WHALES, WILDCARDS & NORTH CASCADES HIGHWAY

JULY 22nd - 25th

· The first day we’ll travel on Hwy 2 to Winthrop for one night in lovely rooms on the Methow river.

· On Tuesday we’ll meander over the North Cascades highway also known as Scenic Highway 20. The North Cascades highway travels through farmlands and small towns, with country stores, fruit and vegetable stands and historic landmarks. As we continue east along Highway 20, we’ll be on the lookout for eagles near the town of Concrete, one of the most popular eagle habitats outside Alaska. Other stops along the way offer rare encounters with old growth forest, spectacular vistas of Ross Lake, Gorge Lake and Diablo Lake, and turn-outs along the way. After crossing the mountains we’ll head for Anacortes and the lovely Swinomish resort and Casino where we’ll spend 2 nights in luxurious in bay view rooms.

· Wednesday, after breakfast, we’ll board the Island Explorer in Anacortes to seek out the largest animal in the food chain of the San Juan Islands, the Orca or Killer Whale. These beautiful and majestic animals are what many people come from afar to see.  With the larger males reaching a length upwards of 25 feet and having a dorsal fin nearing six feet, you really get a feel for just how large and powerful these orcas are.  Viewing an orca pod (family) in the wild is a special privilege that few people ever see.

· After dinner in Anacortes we’ll head back to the lodge where you can try a little gaming with your freebies or just relax with friends on the last night of our adventure.
